About

Welcome to the APICS Exam Warehouse!  A site I created to store notes and tips that will help me (and anybody else for that matter) pass the CPIM APICS Exams.   You are very welcome to use the material I post on this website for your preparation and I sincerely hope you do.

I’ve found after passing 1 of the 5 tests then procrastinating and failing another one, that it’s difficult to stay motivated by myself.  One of my purposes with this site, other than just to study APICS, is to help other stay motivated and determined to pass.    By all means, please post comments about pursuing your CPIM certification and maybe together, as a community, we can encourage each other to accomplish our goals.

I wish you the very best of luck in accomplishing your goal of becoming APICS certified.

I really appreciate your notes, I banged out MPR and DSP in about 4 weeks, down to the last 2 and have until Dec 31. I have been in operations and planning for about 12 years, any tips on the last two exams? ECO and SMR?

      Hey Chris,

Congrats on getting those two exams out of the way so quickly. 4 weeks is impressive… how many hours of study would you say you put in for each test? Also, I’m curious to know what material you’re using to study.

If you continue to study like you did for the last two exams you should do fine. I don’t know if you noticed this with your last two tests, but I found that the hardest part with these APICS exams is understanding each test question. They can really trip you up if you don’t read and re read carefully each question a few times. I was so focused on making sure I understood each question that I usually had less than ten minutes on the 3 hour time limit for taking the test. I didn’t mind spending the time though, after failing one of them I didn’t want to see another $175 go down the tube.

Don’t know if you already have these, but I checked out the APICS Exam Content Manuals before taking each test. They include some helpful information on what topics are covered in the exam to help you prepare. You can get abbreviated versions at APICS.org (full version is $25).

The Strategic Management of Resources exam is a little different than all the other tests. As the name suggests, it’s more strategic in nature so you’ll want to put yourself in the shoes of upper management making those decisions. It’s all about understanding the business environment, developing the business strategy, and implementing that strategy.

      Good Luck!

Thanks for replying, its so great having someone to discuss what this was/is like. I am a father of 2 and do the cooking so I studies about 7 nights at 2 hours per night. I have the Exam Content manual and the website scribd was worth the $9 per month. There you can run searches for APICS material and notes. I also am using your notes for ECO. I have about 12 years of production planning and materials planning under my belt or I too would have failed DSP, tougher than I anticipated. I rocked MPR with a 314 but the 301 on DSP shook my confidence. I banking on your notes to help with this ECO test. My company pays for everything which helps considerably, except failed exams so I will keep banging away at this. I appreciate your notes and the time you took to reply. Like I said its always nice hearing how others successfully passed. I also agree I have to read and re-read the questions over and over until the words almost dont make sense anymore. For some reason I flew through MPR in about 30 minutes, DSP I took a lot longer. Thanks again and if you think of anything else I appreciate it. My old college proffessor taught me to know the vocab, if you do the questions and answers cant mess you up and he’s right

    Chris,

Did you find Cam’s notes helpful? I read that the ECO module was just updated this year and Cam mentioned that his notes were from 2011. I usually use Cam’s notes (thanks Cam!) but I wasn’t sure if they would be relevant with the changes. I’m taking the ECO this weekend and I feel like the content manual for this module is a little confusing in terms of references. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

    Greetings, all.

I feel fortunate (and lucky) that I stumbled onto this website. I take my first test tomorrow. I was laid off in January so I couldn’t afford to take the formal APICS classes held locally; I instead opted for the MGI Home Study Course.

For me, when doing the self-exam at the back of each section in the MGI HSC, I’d sometimes feel that the text didn’t really help prepare me well for the quiz. I would really like to know what training materials others have used to prepare for the certification tests? I’m not too crazy about the MGI HSC.

What does everyone think of –
    a) Classroom training sponsored by their local APICS chapters (costs a lot of $$)?
    b) The Fox Valley online training?

Thanks and best of luck to everyone (me included)!

For all the people, doing the detailed planning and scheduling test, please be aware that for example sustainability and GRI are on the website of Apics as a reference.

I am going to start studying for this test in the very near future. I have limited operations experience and I am reading so much online about how to study and where to start. What study material should I use? The content from the APICS website? Obviously the notes provided will be a good reference. If anybody has online versions of study material and insight on what study material is the best to get me started I would greatly appreciate it.

I took all of the first 4 courses and passed the test first time, two of them I did self study with the APICS workbook. SMR I tookthe class and thought I was ready and got a 293 (300) is passing. The test is $250 now. I am retaking the test again 12/22/14. Two of the questions on the exam were in reference to Dumping. I did not have that in the APICS dictionary or the workbook. To restudy, I borrowed qnd read the SMR sourcebook (which did have Dumping) and reread the workbook, and found a neat little site for vocabulary quizlet.com.

    Wish me luck

I would like to thank you for sharing the notes.
It did really help me pushing myself forward with the exams.
With this notes and collecting a lot of other information, presentations and of-course spending a lot of time studying, it did all work out well for me 🙂

    Thanks again

I have used your notes as an additional material to the Apics practice books and you have a very good summary.

My reason for pursuin CPIM is for professional growth and hoping for a change in path and my career path the past 7 years have been as a warehouse manager.

When you are the “local warehouse” feeding the plant, there is not much planning or scheduling done on our part except staffing to cover their required hours of coverage to feed their lines.

We as a warehouse have no control of what comes in and what goes out. We even use their wms systems.
My point is, that workin in the area I work and for a customer like ours, it makes it hard to really be able to apply what I have been learnin during the certfication process since we are basically here to do what the customer says and how they want us to work It and our I put is taken lightly.

I want to go into supply chain , scheduling, planning area but it has been hard getting rejection emails due to the lack of experience in that area.

What would be your suggestion on how to take that path and get the opportunity knowing my experience as a warehouse manager but no previous planning or scheduling experience.

We do plan our staffing and we monito kpi on on our team, but it is not in the scheduling or planning side like the actual plant that we send the products to

      Hi Rafael,

The CPIM certification is probably the best way to start down the path of getting a planning and scheduling supply chain job. When you have a certification like that on your resume it can really set you apart from other applicants that don’t. Also, don’t discount your warehouse management experience. Warehouse management is a key element to any manufacturing environment and I’m sure you’ve had experiences in the warehouse that would illustrate your sense of urgency, customer focus, and organization, both excellent traits for a good production planner/scheduler.

You mentioned that there’s little you can do in the warehouse to apply the principles you’re learning because the customer calls the shots. I wonder if you did some analysis on a few of their SKUs at your warehouse, do you think you could find ways to move their product through faster which could lower their inventory investment and free up cash? You could then formally present your recommendations to your customer and I bet you’d knock their socks off! That kind of initiative would for sure get any employer to consider you for an opening… hey, maybe even your customer would offer you a job because of it 🙂

Feel free to email me if you’d like to discuss further. Now go make your own luck!

The main thing that worked for me was trying to understand the concepts, rather than memorizing definitions.
It even helps out in those “trick” questions.

Another thing that helped me was, this site, plus taking the pre and post assessments from the Apics website, also pocket prep is a good source, but the most similar questions will come from the free post and pre assessment questions from apics site, It is about 85 free questions that you have access to.

Also, do not over do it with taking practice tests and do not second guess your self during the test.

I did that on my DSP and barely passed the test, but then again, I am not sure if because of changing a few at the end I actually passed, or brought my score down to barely passing.

As i was filling out the test, I felt confident and expected a great score, but I must have misunderstood some questions, or was just not as well prepared as i thought.

    Hi everyone,

    I’m offically CPIM qualified.

I took my final CPIM exam – SMR today and i passed after failing twice in 2013. This term i actually spent alot of time going through the key words and also session 1, 6 and 7. I also bought the online test simulator which i found to be helpful. The example test are formated like the actual exam which helped me prepare.

    Hope this info helps.

    Hi,
I will recommend you to get the Study notes book for each exam and focus on it. It does contains all the relevant information you need to know for the exam. Study it closely. For the ECO exam, I also studied specific chapters of the book Introduction to Materials Management, but for the SMR I can say that the study notes book is enough. I also complemented my studies with practice exams I found on the web.

      Hi Mil,

When you recommend using the Study Notes, are you refering to the Participant Workbooks?
I passed the first 3 modules, but I’ve just failed the ECO exam, and I have lost a bit of self-confidence. When I took the exam I had the impression that the questions were very different from the main subjects that appear ndi the Participant books.
In general, so far, I’ve had that same impression in every exam: that the level of complexity and of reasoning required in the exams were far more complicated that the Workbook or the Practice Questions provided by APICS.

Do you really think Introduction to Materials Management would be enough to support the ECO Workbook?

I have taken the ECO test 4 times now with no luck, this last one I thought I had it, but did worse than before! I don’t get it. There was a few questions that were nowhere in the book, but did my best to guess. I’ve taken the SMR once and failed also. I don’t know where else to study. I took the class back in 2014, and don’t think my job will pay anymore for me to keep failing! Any help is greatly appreciated. What is the best exam simulator? as the apps I’ve found are nowhere near like the real test.
